I got this board TTGO T-CAN485 for this exact purpose.
Monitor some slave devices through rs485 or canbus over external mqtt.
The board It has esp32 on it and also modbus/canbus enabled available ports.
Do you think this board will work with your application ?
It would be nice to have something ready to go without any additional wiring.
PS. For places where wifi is not really available. Is there any similar device for cabled rj45 ?

Conceptually such a gateway requires very little processing power.
I see few spots where the ESP32 is defined. Assuming the pins are correctly set, would this project be compatible with ESP8266?

Thanks for your work, this is a good project.
I am planning to use it to publish via MQTT values from my air heat recovery unit.
The unit however supports writing (besides various configuration settings), also a value in a specific register to set the fan speed to a certain value, or to another register to simulate pressing a physical button.

Could you introduce the monitor of MQTT values? if different from "null", write back to respective Modbus register, then reset to null after successful write.
