vaguely remembered that a few places have this error, either from np.log or divide. simple solution is to add some small values to these places.

Thanks guys. Eventually I'd like to have a general `transform_variance`
function that maps from unconstrained parameterization to positive definite
matrix / positive variances. In that function I'll be sure to add a small
constant to avoid these issues.

I added a bit of tolerance for variances that go to zero. 5324456
I'll open another issue against myself to standardize/generalize the parameter transforms.
