We start at first by saying that "rsync" has its very own checks. You cannot rsync the same directory. This might be tricky indeed if you use mounted disks and links. Most of these checks are already done by rsync itself (at least on unix, linux. Not sure with Mac and its filesystems).

We cannot require a "cross" device test, as using the backup as an alternative/personal version control has to allow the same disk. Technically we can go to alpha/beta stage, but I would add a couple of tests. These tests can indeed be added to the setup to determine if there is any risk.

Part of this problem can be addressed by the UI/GUI but I would like to have a solid backend engine which can be easily plugged into a cron job.

Can we avoid loops? Like backup of of same backup, which will end up into flooding the system?
Like in the default installation. What happen if I backup ~/tmp/rsyncBackup folder?
