For downloads, you can do a size() on the file beforehand if you don't already have the file size from a directory listing. Then it's just a matter of using the total in conjunction with a byte counter incremented inside the relevant 'data' event. For uploads it's a similar story except you should already know the file size.

I most concerned with uploads, FYI.

There isn't a data event listed in the API. For that solution to work do I need to modify the FTP library?

What I was referring to was if you had a stream you're uploading, you could listen on your stream's 'data' event and increment a byte counter in there.

If you're just passing a single Buffer or string, there really is no 'progress' per se because it's passing that chunk as-is to the socket as the contents of the entire file.

Yeah the whole passing in a path thing is really just shorthand for passing in fs.createReadStream(path).
