Adding API to a URL a consumer sees is not a good idea. They didn't do it at the beginning, but why start now? Will it be required soon? I'd rather my visitors not see api.

https://api.twitter.com/* is the recommended URL by Twitter. You are more then welcome to use whatever URL works for you.

I don't think there has been an official announcement and I think that https://twitter.com/* should continue to work.

The current API documentation on dev.twitter.com says to use https://api.twitter.com for all OAuth and REST API URL endpoints. Please update your URLs.
