Handling of escaped character literals about hpp HOT 3 OPEN

Thank you for narrowing it down so far! I’ll dig into it as soon as I can, that seems like a pretty egregious bug.

It’s not obvious to me looking at it why a should turn into a 7 other than a total bug. What am I missing? As for why to perform this step at all, I could imagine a preprocessing directive doing some integer arithmetic with non-decimal literals. I was probably following a spec too closely when writing it and relying on test cases to surface gross breakage.

Our test suite compiles against a good chunk of Hackage and it's hitting a lot of corner cases in the preprocessor. There's even a bug that occurs on windows and not on linux/mac! I'm currently tackling the bugs one by one in a fork and compiling against that fork for now. Once I've verified that the changes pass our entire test suite, I'll submit a PR a provide a test case in the comment for each change I had to make.
