There's not much we can do. The fonts' vertical metrics are set in a cross-platform manner. You'll have to adjust the settings of your app.

Thanks for the quick response. I have tried numerous different system fonts and several Adobe fonts including Adobe Caslon Pro, Adobe Garamond Pro, Adobe Hypatia Sans Pro but Source Sans is the only one that exhibits the behavior in the upper screenshot, all the others work like the lower. Not being a font expert I don't even know where to start, do you have any thoughts on what might be causing this?

If you want to change the values of Source Sans, you can start with the hhea table. Make the Ascender and Descender values the same as the TypoAscender and TypoDescender values of the OS/2 table. In the source files those values are specified in the features file of each font.
