For Java 8, you'll need to use grgit 4.x. grgit 5 uses the latest JGit which requires Java 11.

I'm having the exact same issue using Java 19 with grgit 5.

The consumer was configured to find an API of a library compatible with Java 8, preferably not packaged as a jar, preferably optimized for standard JVMs, and its dependencies declared externally, as well as attribute 'org.gradle.plugin.api-version' with value '7.6' but:
- Variant 'apiElements' capability org.ajoberstar.grgit:grgit-gradle:5.0.0 declares an API of a library, packaged as a jar, and its dependencies declared externally:
- Incompatible because this component declares a component compatible with Java 11 and the consumer needed a component compatible with Java 8
- Other compatible attributes:
- Doesn't say anything about its target Java environment (preferred optimized for standard JVMs)
- Doesn't say anything about org.gradle.plugin.api-version (required '7.6')

Backing down to use: JavaVersion.VERSION_11
. Not certain yet if this will work, have to reconfigure the build machine and test.
from grgit.
Follow-up...using Java 19 does work. The build machine upon reboot reset itself back to using Java 8 by default, which as stated above requires the use of the older grgit.
from grgit.
As Java 8 compatibility will not be restored in the 5+ line, this should be closed, shouldn't it?
