For Java 8, you'll need to use grgit 4.x. grgit 5 uses the latest JGit which requires Java 11.

I'm having the exact same issue using Java 19 with grgit 5.

* What went wrong:
Execution failed for task ':buildSrc:compileJava'.

Backing down to use: JavaVersion.VERSION_11. Not certain yet if this will work, have to reconfigure the build machine and test.

Follow-up...using Java 19 does work. The build machine upon reboot reset itself back to using Java 8 by default, which as stated above requires the use of the older grgit.

As Java 8 compatibility will not be restored in the 5+ line, this should be closed, shouldn't it?
