My 2c: don't infer anything from the data type -- this will lead to surprising behavior for the user. I can't tell you how many bugs I've had resulting from arrays having unexpected dtypes.
The API should either make it clear how to pass in spike times vs. continuous traces, or expose the interpolator as a customizable option.
