OK, may be download code it is not a good idea.
About branching I also thing it is perfect.
I also thing we should consider at least download GWT strings, and may be also add an special string, that could be use to inform to the app (users) that we are working on API change, if it needs a new APK or the new API needs more changes than expected.

The GWT parsing code is actually guessing in a lot of places, and the whole thing is very far from being eligible for automation. Fortunately, GWT is going away :)

Might be technically doable for the new one, but probably not worth the effort: there will most probably be other things that need to be updated besides parsing (adding new fields to the UI, etc.) Unless someone really wants to play with JSON schema (or whatever the name is) or something similar, of course.
