This error means that we have a problem communicating with the broker. Are your host, password, etc correct?
What do your brokers logs say?

I am using the MQTT Server & Web Client add on (https://github.com/hassio-addons/addon-mqtt/blob/master/README.md) on Hassio
I see nothing looking at the add on's log. Also nothing in the home assistant log.
I can use the credentials in the mqtt_preferences file to connect to the mqtt broker through HiveMQ
Couple things to note:
I have the script installed on a Raspberry Pi 3 B+, because I happened to have a spare one
Im a relative newbie to MQTT and Home Assistant. I may need some hand holding ;)

Figured it out. Silly me didn't notice that the addon comes with ssl enabled by default. Generated the keys and it now works!
