Hmmm. Try adding more v's (-vvv) to get more output and see what is going on.
For the cron job, at the end of the line, also add 2>&1 to redirect stderr to your log file as well. The above only redirects stdout.
Let me know what you get.

Ah, whoops, thank you, the stderr redirection slipped my mind. This showed me that cron couldn't find the backup monkey executable in the path, I'll just specify it explicitly.
