Feature Request about antennapod HOT 8 CLOSED

Playlist Support (minimum Audio and Video Podcast playlist)

Playlists are imho kind of useless in a podcatcher. They make sense in a music player, but not in a podcatcher. Besides AntennaPod already has a queue and continuous playback, I don't think that you really need playlist support then.

podcast will delete after listen 2.a. mark podcast to hold on the phone

This sentence is kind of confusing, but it would be nice if there would be an option which would enable automatic deletion of podcasts after the user has listened to the entire episode.

"cloud" sync for multiple devices

I am not so sure what you mean by that, but syncing entire podcasts episodes over the internet is a pain the ass. AntennaPod already allows you to export you feeds in the opml format, many other podcatcher are able to import these opml files. So it's pretty easy to "sync" the podcast feeds you have subscribed to over multible devices.

Video Playback (i can not test it on my phone during crashes)

Not sure so what you mean by that but AntennaPod is already able to play video podcasts...

so sorry. but i come from the apple world :)
for me .. any podcatcher must have a player to combine the features that you need to listen podcasts.
just imagine that you are traveling and cannot spend time to view videos. so its are fantastik if you have a own playlist for audio titles only or new podcast or podcast that you have listen in the past (and store)

yes i understand that is a sensitive option. but the user should be able to say: that episode should be stored on my device after reading. the other option is that you must delete all episodes manual.
for example: at this moment i have 62 episodes unread on my phone and i think so 25-30 podcasts. for me its a good feature that the episodes will delete episodes after listening.

cloud sync:
for me is cloud syncing that the status of my podcasts are stored. for example: which episodes and podcasts are listen, deleted, partitial listen.
with this status a another client (for example a tabled) can download and mark the podcasts/episodes exactly as on the other device. so you can stop listen on one device and continue on the other device without fast-forward or so on.

video playback: ok i can not test it in this moment. my antennapod crash directly if i will download one episode or make an update over all feeds.

1. I probably won't implement that because i think that the 'new' list and the queue should be enough to keep track of the episodes the user wants to listen to and i want to keep the app simple when it comes to the user interface.
2. There will be an 'auto-delete' feature in the next version which deletes an episode after you have listened to it.
3. I actually don't want to send any of the user's data to the cloud or build a cloud service because it probably would be way too complex. But i also think that it should be made easier to get data out of the app (e.g. choose where you want to save the exported opml file or make it easier to find your downloaded episodes in a file manager) or import data (e.g. import an opml file directly from the file manager).
4. There is video support in the app but it is not as well tested as audio playback, so it might still be unstable. If you have any problems with a specific video podcast you can send me a link and i will try to fix it.

I was writing the text above before you posted your second comment so here is what i have to add to the second one:

I can see your point about the playlist feature but i am not sure if how often people will need something like this. One of the main goals of this app is to be simple and that also means that more advanced features like playlists won't be implemented.

video playback: I think your AntennaPod installation is broken. It would be great if you could send me some more helpful data (logfile from aLogcat, crash report from Android, OPML file with your feeds or any other information) so that i can fix that issue. After that, reinstalling the app should make it work again.

Thanks! I think i have found the reports you have send me and i have also found a bug in the app that could be the reason for your problem. It would be nice if you could try out the new version (0.9.5) and check if you still have the same issue.

I think the cloud sync feature is really important.

I for example reinstalled android on my phone and also antenapod but all the podcasts that I subscribed to were lost because I am not familiar with the antenapod backup mechanism and also forgot to backup that.

If antenapod could come with an online account, which stores the subscription list and also some meta information to easily restore the status after a reinstallation or even synchronize it among different devices, this were awesome.

@JakobEichler this is accomplished currently by the use of gpodder.net. I have used it to sync subscriptions to my Ubuntu gpodder program with some success. I can't tell if it's synchronizing episode progress or not, but it's better than nothing.

Fundamentally this functionality is much harder to have in an open-source podcasting app because nobody's around to run a server everyone can store their accounts on. Gpodder.net is the closest thing I can see.

panoptikum.io might some day be an alternative to gpodder, but I haven't looked at it for a while and thus do not know if we could already integrate it or not.
