One possible solution: Mark the comment as deleted and render a skin instead of
the
content. Subcomments will be rendered normal.

I don't think it would be ideal to pretend the comments were deleted while
actually
leaving the content in the DB, inaccessible to the authors, blogowners and
sysadmins
(without direct access to the DB), deleting would be more honest.
Of course it would be fine if the note that the comment has been deleted could
be
displayed in varied languages later on (depending on where i18n goes) as
opposed to
writing the exact wording in every "soft deleted" comment.

Well, the contents would not have to be inaccessible for everyone, surely
depends on
who “deleted” the comment. It would provide the possibility to
“undelete” a comment
which could be helpful sometimes...
