On the command line, the situation is somewhat better, in that it at least shows the location of the new file:

Has nothing to do with the location of the original file being read-only. Can be easily reproduced with AppImageUpdate version 1-alpha (commit 6fbc9e9), build 122 built on 2017-11-12 00:58:28 UTC like this:
- Download https://github.com/Subsurface-divelog/subsurface/releases/download/v4.7.3/Subsurface-6f65f5191-x86_64.AppImage (v4.7.3)
- Use AppImageUpdate on it
- Click "Run app!"
- Check the about box - we are still running v4.7.3 despite that Subsurface-a157fa5c6-x86_64.AppImage (v4.7.4) has been downloaded
from appimageupdate.
