In order to diagnose the problem, we'll need the device URI you are using (lpstat -v) and the printer make and model.

Device is a Sharp ar-505 digital imager (printer/copier). AFAIK it only does lpd. Addressed as lpd://spc505/PORT1. The printer name "spc505" has both hosts and DNS support.
I have boosted the error log level to debug in hopes of capturing some more data in case it happens again.

We have an AR-450 in our lab; assuming the network interface has a similar firmware rev, the AR-505 should also support IPP.

That said, I'll do tests against our AR-450 and let you know if I can duplicate the problem.

OK, just tested it remotely - the job appeared to go through with no errors.

Find out if you have the current firmware in your 505's network card...

There's many doubts about this printer. The nic card was changed once - and the vendor, at least to my way of thinking, put in a down level card as the first card supported DHCP and the "new" one doesn't. Neither card runs faster than 10baseT and there is no mention of anything other than LPD via the console, web or the telnet interface.
Telent shows "Unit Serial no. 706200 v4.39". I'm guessing the v4.39 is the firmware level. I'll try and check its status relative to current.

BTW, I wrote about this particular printer in the cups.general newsgroup, titled "weird printer problems (possibly even scary)" posted on 4/9/03. My thoughts are that the printer is the culprit but until my client replaces it (or the vendor fixes it - they will not believe the printer is at fault, they don't know Unix/Linux [they hardly know Windows] and claim the printer is fine. If only I could prove it was the printer or at least get some corporate Sharp tech assistance) I'm just trying to nurse it through. Normally it provide problems once or twice a week requiring a power on reset to straighten it out. But with the new LPD timeout feature in 1.1.19, CUPS has stopped it twice in one day, which is why I was looking for a way to adjust that particular timeout value. Whether or not is should ever be adjusted is another question.

I can't find anything at the Sharp site regarding firmware.

I did find this link:
http://www.morganbrookes.com/Drivers/Sharp%20AR-series%20PB2a%20Summary%20v1.1.pdf

There's an interesting note in the Network Cards row - "disappearing off Network problem". Which is one of the problems we have with this printer.

Sorry to get so far away from the CUPS issue itself - that of possibly adjusting the LPD backend timeout value.

Oh, FWIW you add the LPD options in the device URI, e.g.:

lpd://host-or-ip/queue?option=value+option=value

The timeout option sets the timeout in seconds, e.g. timeout=300.

The reserve option controls whether the backend reserves a priviledged local port, e.g. reserve=yes.

After an update on a linux/redhat (8.0 --> 9.0), cups does
not work completely. The message is :
Remote host did not accept control file (111)
The job stays in the processing queue.

The answer was in the precedent post.
Adding "?reserve=yes" to the device URI solved my problem.
