Hmm. These issues might all be resolved in the version of Matlab I am
running (the newest, 2014b), because I am not seeing any of that.

I confirm that the problem is indeed solved when using Matlab 2014b (I was using 2013b).

I'm going to leave this issue here (not close this), because this is
probably still affecting other people (with versions <2014b), but I don't
have the bandwidth to look more closely into this, at the moment. If anyone
else wants to jump in, feel free to have at it.
