Unfortunately the selector has to be the row. Meteor sets "this" based on the scope in the template, and cells are inside an inner loop through the fields, so "this" will be a field rather than a collection object.
However, it should be possible to do whatever you need to using the row. Clicking a link in a cell bubbles up an event to the row, so you can set your event selector to "tr" and detect what was actually clicked on using the event argument - event.currentTarget will contain the row, but event.target will contain the link.
