This is a pretty easy thing to do. What we do have to decide is if we really want a splash screen.
A splash screen can be for branding, which would require an artificial delay. That is not very useful and users don't like to wait. The other use is to replace the "Loading..." message with a splash screen. In this route, a splash screen is more purposeful, and I'm thinking of doing it this way. I can may be add a 3 second artificial delay (It takes about a second for the nutrients list to show up) and then back to the activity at hand. Or may be no delay at all and the splash screen is there for however long it takes to get the data. If it's fast, it's fast and the user misses the splash screen altogether.

In the absence of an artificial delay, on a fast net connection, rather than missing the splash screen altogether, the user might see a flicker / flash, which might seem weird / like a bug.
I recommend implementing this without an artificial delay like you suggest and then seeing how it behaves with a fast net connection (dragonfly3)
