It might help to look at grunt.template.process and the Configuration section on this page: https://github.com/gruntjs/grunt/wiki/Upgrading-from-0.3-to-0.4 to see how grunt is doing this with underscore

I'm going to close this for now, because I don't think it makes sense to do this anymore now that we're processing underscore templates in YAML front matter. The way the underscore templates are implemented solves the problem, and doing it that way keeps a separation of concern between "configuration templates" (underscore) and everything else
