Cross-post from GH-172:

Not sure yet whether it makes sense to fold this into a combined plugin to handle multiple states or statuses for VMs.

The plugin could be named something like check_vmware_vm_status and could check if:

  • disk consolidation is needed
  • there is an active question
  • VM is running on a snapshot
  • there are connected optical drives

For the first two, these are boolean states and there is either a situation to be reported, or there isn't. For the last two, there isn't really a problem if either is true for a short period of time, only for an extended period. This seems to suggest that we would need to track state somehow, unless when either became true is provided by vSphere/govmomi. That would allow us to gauge the duration without tracking when the status was first observed. Offhand this would suggest one of two approaches:

  • don't track duration

    • instead provide example configuration (via contrib files) which infrequently performs check and when a match is found retry with long delays for a large number of times
  • track duration externally

    • because service checks are not persistent
    • via a local database/datastore of some kind (e.g., SQLite)

Note to self: It looks like we can not only tell whether a VM is blocked from execution by an interactive question, but we can see what specific question is active as well:

NAME TYPE DESCRIPTION
choice ChoiceOption List of key-value pairs that specify possible answers.
id xsd:string Identifier with an opaque value that specifies the pending question.
message* VirtualMachineMessage[] The message data for the individual messages that comprise the question. Only available on servers that support localization.Since VI API 2.5
text xsd:string Text that describes the pending question.
