maybe the proto->TS translator doesn't handle scalar-ish types (eg strings) the same way as objects?

This is likely the reason, yeah. Technically the other optionals are still required to be empty string.

I think using .create might handle it automatically, but will need to confirm

from authzed-node.

It's the way repeated fields are handled by the translator and the use of the .create helpers is the recommended approach. More info in this comment on a similar issue: #33 (comment)
