Wouldn't it be simpler to implement this in lua than in C?

We could be careful and write some special serializer code. Or you just write some lua-compatible code into the property and loadstring the result.

@blueyed Can this be closed? With way-cooler in the picture, adding more Awesome specific stuff to the xproperty API may not make as much sense anymore.

@Timidger Way-cooler will eventually need an equivalent API, but it doesn't need to be compatible with this and is the lowest possible priority. This API is used to persist values across Awesome restart. In my opinion and what I preached elsewhere is that people should just stop restarting Awesome 20 time a day and develop in a Xephyr equivalent, but few listen.
