I see that the patent has now expired - perhaps it is time to re-open this issue for discussion?

No, I'm afraid that I don't have any such plans. As much as I would like to support mp3, switching out the backend library would be akin to rewriting all of PySoundFile.
That being said, it might be feasible to convert your dataset to OGG or FLAC.
Also, the last MP3 patents will expire in 2017, so maybe libsndfile will add support for MP3 then (source).

Soundfile will support mp3 as soon as sndfile adds support for it!
Perhaps @erikd can tell us about his plans for supporting MP3?
Alternatively, you could open an issue at https://github.com/erikd/libsndfile

Nope. No MP3 support yet in a release of libsndfile.
