I suspect obsproject/obs-studio#5347 is related to why the transparency looks great on dark, and less so on light backgrounds. In particular, this comment stood out to me:
Something to note is that the alpha behavior should match OBS 26 if the color behind your overlay is black, but it will diverge more and more the brighter your background is. This is because of a fundamental change we made to color mixing in OBS 27 to make it more accurate. You can find more information about that change here:
