Ignoring missing attributes is an expected behaviour. So you can have one filter that react on requests and responses, and one another only on requests. Other way to write the code but less efficient : if hasattr(f, kind): ... I don't really see how it could harm here

Oh, I didn't even notice that you were trying to catch the error right in that block. Shouldn't it be like this then?

try:
    func = getattr(f, kind)
except AttributeError:
    continue
func(client) # let this one raise loudly, if it has any trouble
