You are not missing something - we should have a setAlpha function available to be modified (or make changes to the a property actually be used). Probably setAlpha so we could make sure to clamp it to a valid 0-1 value.

Take a look at https://github.com/bgrins/TinyColor/blob/master/tinycolor.js now and let me know if setAlpha / getAlpha handles your case

I haven't actually had a chance to use it yet this week, but the get and set functions look to be what I needed. Thanks!
