This is rather a bug from the Aitoc extension, as the base Mage_Adminhtml_Block_Widget_Grid::_prepareCollection() method is actually protected, or maybe they explicitly need it to be public.
Anyway, it should be better to disable the rewrite for this grid (and the others having the same problem) than to change the scope of the method on all the rewriting classes (potentially, while waiting for them to fix the scope in their class).
