The conversion from float only works to signed int (the floats and ints both have sign bits in the same place).
If I divide max and min both by 2 (then add 1 to the log result), I think that will eliminate the overflow risk by shaving off a bit + truncation. The result of that computation doesn't have to be super-accurate; being off by 1 won't cause much impact (might slow it down a little bit).
