Yep, I just ran into that same issue when building the samples in release mode. It appears that when loading the project to retrieve the replacement tokens, the imported MSBuild task requires an absolute path. This has been corrected. Try downloading and installing the latest version of the extension and see if that fixes it.

Although the token is replaced now, it is not replaced with the right value. I did a Release build of the samples project, but the package contained the value Debug.

Yes, it appears that loading the project directly to retrieve its properties is not going to work. I'll need to spend a bit more time with this to see if there is a way to get the global MSBuild properties dictionary to use to evaluate the replacement tokens.

I think I've found a way to retrieve the live project instance from MSBuild to use to bind the replacement tokens. The latest version should have the fix.
