Interesting. Is this to make the links show in the admin change view?

Not sure we can support every use case and this seems a bit hacky. Perhaps we could more generically catch fields that can't be displayed and show a Warning for just that field.

If there is a different way to do this that is not hacky, I would love to use it. I thought this was basically the expected way to add derived read only fields to an admin. Can you suggest an alternative?

readonly_fields are supported but it freaks out in your case for some reason.

I don't think, that it is hacky at all, since it is mentioned in the docs. Plus there seems to be one-liner that fixes this issue: pull request #26.
