Nothing is recording in the log file, the snippet in the original post was from stdout. I looked at the stackoverflow link, I don't really understand the python bits, but I can resolve the youtube links in my terminal using nslookup / ping.

try to use youtube-dl directly in terminal like:

youtube-dl -v https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0PPD4Eypuc

the stackoverflow link, just says that you should check your environment variables for proxy settings (link http_proxy). But I think you didn't setup such variables.

And maybe check your host file if you blocked any domains...

no issues with running youtube-dl directly. Also my host file is fine, and I can see the dns request go out successfully through my dns server.

You can run the downloader now with the new option --verbose. Maybe this will help us find out what is happening.
