Spine does actually warn if ICMP would not work but only if DEBUG logging is enabled. This is too high a level for such an important setting so I have created a pull request to always warning if failing back from ICMP to UDP. This is important for several reason:
- Cacti should report the fact that it is switching protocols. Failing to do so will result in confusion to the end user if a ping at command line is working but Cacti says the host is down when it is not.
- Firewall rules are likely to seriously complain if ICMP pings are allowed and expected but UDP ones are not. This would doubly contribute to the 'host down' scenario.
