The colour selector in most browsers includes the eye dropper tool that allows you to pick and existing colour from your screen, would that do the trick?

Yes, this would work!

Eyedropper doesn't give a consistent colour. It never quite matches.
BUT one could "remember" the colour, and type this back in. Easier if one uses the hex colour, so when a colour is chosen I would need to write down the hex colour. And this can be entered when I want to use that colour again.

I'm not sure if this would be best implemented with a legend, or separately. But if combined, you could have behaviour like:
- show initial colours in legend with group name from the colour aesthetic
- as new colours are brushed, they appear in the legend
- switch selector to appropriate colour when legend colours are clicked
This would take some time to implement and get right, and to be honest I would rather not do it myself (working on other side projects at the moment). But if you have anyone who wants to contribute I'd be happy to provide guidance

Yes, I think too complicated. At least not an immediate priority.
