I've made lots of test decks and done different things, and found that I don't experience this when follow this procedure:
- Get it working on the desktop
- Check the media database
- Do at least one review
- Sync everything
And sometimes it works even when I don't do all those things. And the person who reported this bug in JLU comments said he tried lots of things that sounds like it included this. So I'm not sure this is the correct procedure but this is where I'm at now.
So yeah... if anyone is experiencing this it would be helpful to hear as precisely as possible what procedure they followed.

Anki2 is no longer in beta so I'm not going to worry about Anki1 integration issues anymore.
