If you click on tiles and look at their textures, the darker ones are all shown as "sRGB" while the lighter ones are shown as "UNorm". Not sure why that's happening, but I think it explains the visual difference.

Looks like a problem with marshalling booleans between C# and C++. The Texture2D constructor we're using takes two bools as its last two parameters, the second of which specifies whether the texture is linear (true) or sRGB (false). We're passing false, but because the C++ and the C# code disagree about the size of a bool, the C# uses random memory as the value instead.
