Maybe try something like this in your json file?
[
{% for post in site.posts %}{% if post.category == '1' %}
{
"title" : " ",
"content" : " ",
"url" : " ",
"category": "{{ post.category }}"
}{% else %}
{
"title" : {{ post.title | jsonify }},
"content" : {{ post.content | jsonify }},
"url" : {{ post.url | jsonify }},
"category": "{{ post.category }}"
}{% endif %}{% unless forloop.last %},{% endunless %}
{% endfor %}
]
Using conditionals with the unless
sometimes causes errors with the json file, I'm bypassing this by adding all posts to the json file but not giving it any searchable content. The json file doesn't look pretty but it does work. Here's where I'm using it in a similar vein.

@daviddarnes Great, thanks. I ended up creating two json search files for each blog. Also, I created the search.html
which has the code for the search box and put it into the _includes
folder. This simplifies the process and now for each blog I just do `{% include search.html param="/search_blog1.json" %}, and I use this param variable in the search html javascript.
