Yes, this solution is a bit hacky. I should say that I connected the Camera to a raspberry pi instead since a while.
Having said that, you don't modify your kernel directly with the following approach. This is "only" a kernel mod, meaning the driver for webcams.
FreeNAS does not intend to install packages in the root OS, but it is possible (however, this won't survive a reboot [1]).
This can be fixed by editing the configuration files in /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/, setting toggling the “enabled” parameter to “no” for local.conf and to “yes” for FreeBSD.conf.

So after enabling pkg sources, you can update pkg pkg update
.
Then follow the rest of the howto, which should work.
[1] If you happen to reboot often and the approach works, you could put the steps into a startup script that is called by crontabs @reboot
directive.
