Decomposition policy of the IDS prefers the actual shapes appeared on standard to the etymological expression (but if the famous dictionaries put them, I will appear it with [X] flags.) for 曰 vs. 日 issues, if I there is a space between second horizontal stroke and vertical stroke, I may use 曰 as a component, but otherwise, I would use 日 for consistency and for ease of searching character.

FWIW, while not a dictionary, the 楷書体 T-font (http://charcenter.t-engine.org/tfont/index.html) used on http://jigen.net shows the 日 in 最, 書, 曹, 曽, 替 as 曰, and there's even a space on the left side for 更. I'll check out paper dictionaries (from a quick look on their website, apparently, the public library in my city has a full copy of the 大漢和辞典 and a few other renown dictionaries)

Thanks for your comments. I certainly think that some famous dictionaries do use "曰" shapes. I also attach the decomposition with "[X]" flag when well-known OS equipped font use the different shape from the standard documents. (I often see such cases in Ariel, MingLiu and Simsun fonts.) When time spares, I will check it, but if you let me know, I will check the dictionary and reflect them ASAP.

It turns out, in the 大漢和辞典, 最, 書, 曹, and 替 are all printed with a space on the right side of the second horizontal stroke, as in 曰. 曽 doesn't appear in that dictionary, but its 旧字, 曾, does, and it also uses 曰. However, 更 notably doesn't have a space on the right side of the third horizontal stroke in that dictionary, although it appears under 曰部. More interestingly, many characters in the 日部 section also have a space on the equivalent stroke, showing 曰 instead of 日, starting with 日 itself. The first character in the 日部 section to not have a space is 旧. 旦, appearing before, does have one.

In 字通 by 白川静, they all have no space.
