Once we make this repository public and enable github pages for this repository.
Below url will be publicly accessible.
https://clockworkmicro.github.io/currentzoom/currentzoom.js

So I changed the library reference with above url in our example page and It will work once we make this repo public.

Is there a motivation to keep the filename index.html, or would something like examplelocal.html and exampleremote.html be good?

index.html is a standart name for web servers to first check in a folder, cloning this repository and pointing a web server to this repository folder automatically display the index.html even without typing index.html portion of the url.
After making the repository public, I think one example should be enough.

Also, what do you think about embedding the example within the readme?

As far as I know we can't embed html into readme but I have put a gif to explain what this widget is doing visually.
