When I submitted this bug, I was using the then-current release of Chrome. A new version for macOS came out today: 72.0.3626.81. With this version, ImprovedTube now works—videos can play.
Devs, feel free to close this, unless you want to deal with the incompatibility with the previous Chrome.

i prefer the old look of chrome so i use chromium 70.0.3538.110 (aka the "bookmarks and tabs still fit" version) as its the last version that has the flag settings to disable the material design
my issue is that videos require clicking to start them after the video page loads, though i knew itd become annoying fast so i didnt actually click the video start overlay

imo the most likely versions that will be used are the 4 listed there but 70 seems to have all the settings needed to have it act like 68
