Dirmi was originally designed to support multiplexing over a single socket, but I abandoned that approach long ago. I was unhappy with the performance and decided to go for a simpler connection pooling approach. As a result, simply providing a stream pair is insufficient. New connections need to be established and closed, and the ping task has a dedicated connection too. Implementing a new ChannelBroker is a fair amount of work, and the PipedChannelBroker is primarily used for in-process testing.
