Sounds to me like you set the COMPOSER env var to the path of the phar file. That's not a good idea since the COMPOSER env var is used by composer to override the path to composer.json. So just make sure you remove this variable and it should work again.

That is what it was. This issue is resolved. Thank you. I added a variable to the composer.phar file directly. As soon as I removed that the problem is resolved.

For the benefit of future readers:
I also had this problem. In my case, I was calling Composer as a Cron job, via Phing. My crontab used a variable called COMPOSER. Renaming the variable to COMPOSER_BIN fixed my problem.

Same problem, resolved in Win Terminal, but does not work in CygWin64 terminal.
