Yes the documentation is still valid.
Did the partition columns exists at the JSON document you imported? If yes, everything should be fine because we detect these columns and so import the documents to the correct partition.
If not, afaik a error should be raised, please tell us what exactly happened after your maybe wrong import. Thanks.

What is the correct expression to use COPY FROM with the PARTITION statement?
COPY tweet PARTITION(partition_column='day') FROM βfile:///tmp/tweets.json' ?

should read e.g:
copy tweet partition(day='20140101') from ...
this states that the column 'day' has the value '20140101' for every row imported and that the value does not need to be inlined in each row in the file.
