The correct behaviour for hovering text that doesn’t do anything is the traditional caret/text cursor, not the sharp ‘default’ one; it would make more sense to me to keep the cursor behaving like it’s hovering text that doesn’t do anything…

Hm. I've tried my intuition with the elements on this page right now. I find it not optimal, that the icons on this site show the caret on hovering ('cause of icon font). And I looked at the "open" label at the top right. You have a default cursor for most of the green area, but get the caret when coming near the label text. I'd prefer having a default cursor in this case, as it would let stay the element more in the background, like any ordinary img.
