I think the convention is src/main/[lang] rather than src/[lang]/main.

You currently use modbat-test/src/main for the source code of the test models, which are essentially system tests. Would test/src/ also make sense, especially once we convert the tests to unit tests?

Unit tests should certainly be in src/test, which will make it easy to run them with gradle test. The thing is that classes in src/test are not included in the jar automagically. To fit the current test script it was easier to put all test classes in a subproject which matches the jar that should be produced. Once proper unit tests are in place however, there's no need for this separate subproject.
