How about metalake?
But there has been a company's name is https://www.metalake.com/about
I wonder if we can use this name.

If we select a trademark (in class 42) or a company name it may not be accepted by ASF trademarks. See https://incubator.apache.org/guides/names.html.

We could keep Graviton, the risk would be:

  • AWS or another company asks us to stop using it
  • VP Trademarks ASF rejects the name on entry to the Incubator

I think the first risk is small and the second a concern but not certain. If either of those happend, we would need to change the name. It's much harder to change a name when you have a small community or you're at the point on Incubation than now.

Metalake has been trademarked in the US (classes 35 and 42) so probably not, but given different fields of business, (big data vs websites) VP Trademarks might allow it.

We do have some candidates: "lepton", "blazer", not sure are they ok?

"LEPTON AI" was a pending trademark in the USA. LEPTON is trademarked in Spain and Mexico. Blazer has many trademarks - but most seem to be for hardware e.g [1]. Blazor is also an open source framework. [2]

VP Brand/trademarks got back to me and it's best if we change the name. This is what he had to say:

Justin,

Thanks for the information in the PNS. It is very helpful.

I think the project could legally use the name Graviton but the default ASF position of "playing nicely with others" means that a new name would be required.

If the project has been using the Graviton name publicly then there might be a case to continue using it but there would need to be a compelling reason.

If the project hasn't been using the name Graviton publicly then a new name would be required.

Fundamentally, I am concerned about AWS Graviton. It is hardware but Amazon do refer to it extensively in the context of open source. Turning it around, I don't think the ASF would be too happy if had Amazon introduced AWS Druid rather than AWS Graviton but would have had a hard time preventing it.

HTH,

Mark

So perhaps we could use "Gravitino"? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitino.

No relevant trademarks or software use that name from what I can see.

Seems a bit longer and not easy to pronounce. What's your opinion? @JunpingDu @xunliu @sandflee @mchades @yuqi1129 @diqiu50 @yunqing-wei

Should we also decide on the names of the other two projects(the Unified Computing Frontend and the Data Intermediate Layer) if we choose to find a name in the particle field, to prevent encountering the same problem as we are currently facing?

It doesn't matter to me as neither is very common in daily life, as long as the meanings of the two are similar.

What is also important is that a) the ASF will accept the name, b) there are no trademark issues, c) there are no major OS projects with the same name. While it might be legally OK to use Graviton we would need to develop a compelling reason for the ASF to accept it. Given their concerns, can anyone suggest a reason they would accept it?

For Unified Computing Frontend and the Data Intermediate Layer we could possibly use the following which, from a quick search, have no obvious trademark or OS issues:

  • Gluino (works for either layer)
  • Fermion (UCF)

Names that are likely to have trademark or open source issues:

  • Gluon
  • Boson
  • Baryon
  • Lepton
  • Meson
  • Quark
  • Neutrino

Here is the process for checking an incubation projct name:
https://incubator.apache.org/guides/names.html

And here's the form I filled out for Graviton:

We have a concensus to use "gravitino" as a new name, so close this issue as completed.
