Hm, it sounds as intended in VLC Player 2.0.4 on Mac. Are you sure you're not confusing the intentional background noise, change of pitch, and lots of voices reading numbers backwards with something that is wrong?
I believe Chrome has its own sound engine on any OS, so you can hear the original "as intended" sound by dragging the example into its tab. Does it sound similarly to what you get in WMP and VLC?

Oh! I hear them now :). The background noise is really loud and it's hard to spot the quiet numbers.

Yeah, making secure audio captchas requires putting a lot of noise and confusing sounds there :-)
