Are you sure that both the example and the framework versions are the same? Based on your sample file name (gp_symbreg.py), I would say no, because this example has been renamed to "gp/symbreg.py" some time ago.
Moreover, the errors you're facing are related to the 0.9->1.0 changes, and are listed in the porting guide ( http://deap.gel.ulaval.ca/doc/default/porting.html#genetic-programming-gp ).
Could you please ensure that you are indeed using 1.0 version of the examples? If there's still an issue, we'd be glad to look at it.

Another naive question as I just started looking into genetic programming:
would DEAP allow one to generate the mathematical relationships between
different variables from a dataset like what Eureqa does?
