Sorry, this function wasn't well documented, since we were still finalizing the syntax. The format has just been updated in the latest version and is now documented: http://derbyjs.com/#subscription
Previously there was a shortcut for creating a ref by passing an object to the method with the property used as the reference path. This was a little too wacky, so we have come up with a much simpler solution where the callback now receives scoped models instead. All of the derby examples have been updated to use this new approach.
